How did you do that to your hair?

So with many women going natural a big question I hear is "What do you use for your hair"? Although I have a ton of products under my sink and in cabinets, I would only consider myself to "use" about 60% of the stuff. We all have different types of hair, and I personally don't keep up with hair typing. You know the 4A hair and the 3B...this is truly foreign to me. For many this is what helps them to determine what will and won't work for their particular hair. My journey has been trial and error from jump. When I started going natural, I had two friends who were already natural (sounds like this could be a huge help) however, they both wore dreads. The two of them had no idea about the problems of shrinkage, how to detangle, or protective styles. All of this was learned through experience. I must say, those comments of "I like your hair" keep me motivated to try new things. The ladies in the Kinky Girls group also have various hair types and numerous ways to wear their hair (even the dread heads. lol). They kept me searching for new ways to wear my hair and ways to keep it healthy.

My suggestions once you have BC'd would be;

1. Try the cheap stuff first
-Sometimes you may find a cheaper product with the same benefits as a more expensive one.

2. Be patient
-The beautician that you use to go to didn't just start whipping hair into place over night. It took practice and patience.

3. Don't be afraid
-Try that outrages style that you think will look crazy. Those are the styles that make our hair unique and those fierce styles are the ones that get the compliments.

4. Grow thick skin
-Not everyone is going to like your hair...SO FREAKIN WHAT!!! No matter what you do in life there will ALWAYS be SOMEBODY who doesn't like it. Brush off the ignorant comments and know that some people are adapting to you knew look and some are going to follow your lead. Do it for you and be confident with your new do

5. Deep Condition
-Major for maintaining healthy hair. Get yourself into a ritual when it comes to deep conditioning (especially during the winter months). This is a huge step in adding and keeping moisture. Either 30 minutes under the dryer with conditioner in or wet your hair, add conditioner, wrap it in saran wrap or a curl bag and let it set over night while you sleep. Once you awake, then rinse it out and style as normal. I suggest finding time for this at least once a week.

What else do you do with your hair that you would like to share? Your input is appreciated and helpful to others. If you have questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks

  2. Have you tried deep conditioning it overnight? Saturate your hair with a good conditioner (Aubrey's, Giovanni, Tresemme', or even Herbal Essence) Wet it a little bit and put a plastic bag or wrap it in saran wrap. Put yor satin cap over that, to help with the crinkle sound. Do this weekly and you will notice a difference. Also, try adding coconut oil to your products. Let me know how this works for you =)
