Life and Times of a Product Junkie

So a fellow Kinky Girl (Ashley) texted me today and told me about all the yummy products she was picking up from Target. Being that I am a PJ (product junkie) this was difficult to hear and not participate. So...soon as break time came at work, the first place I drove to ( a very slow 53mph) was Target. Now for any of my naturals who have been in Target lately, you KNOW all the fun stuff they have for us. It is easy to go broke in this store.
Well being that I know my limits (sort of) I decided to go back to an original product that I use to love, Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioner. This is about $6.00 for a 16oz container. This has great slip and is just the right consistency (not too watery and not too thick). Plus for that price, you can't beat it.
I also, decided to pick up a bottle of Herbal Essence Hydralicious; Reconditioning Conditioner. This was about $3.00 for a 10oz bottle. Although I have never tried it before, I figured it would be worth it since I have been pleased with EVERY Herbal Essence product I have purchased, plus it states it is for dry/damaged hair. Although my hair does not fall into either of these categories, with the winter weather quickly approaching, that extra moisture will help against brittle hair. FYI its the purple bottle of Hydralicious.
The final product that I decided to purchase was Curls Blissful Lengths; Kukinut Oil Elixir. This is suppose to aid with hair growth and can be used as a heat protectant. A happy healthy scalp would produce healthy hair (along with so many other factors) but I have always had a pretty dry scalp and during the winter it just gets worse. This product was about $8.00 for a 4oz bottle. I have my own oil mixture that I created at home, which consist of raw shea butter, virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, and pure coconut oil. I may add a few drops of this oil into my mixture to see if I can create the ULTIMATE CONCOCTION!!! (pinky finger to the corner of my mouth moment)
Now you may think, that's not too bad, but the fact that I have unopened bottles of product at my home now...SMH...well unless someone come out with a PJ rehab program, I got ta do what I got ta do!

TRESemme' Naturals

So a few days ago, I attempted to dye my hair. In order to add a bit of extra moisture to my hair, I grabbed a small $.99 bottle of TRESemme' Naturals (travel size). Not really thinking too much about it, or really knowing what benefits it would have.

After my color attempt flopped (color only took to my edges, so I look like I have on a auburn headband), I added the bottle of conditioner. I was pleasantly surprised! So I use to have people ask me all the time, "What are your staple products?" And I truly had no idea, due to the fact that I switched things up so often. Well a year and 2 months later, I have a few products/items that are not going anywhere.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be June 6th, 2010 at Ontario Place Clubhouse 7325 Ontario St, Omaha, NE 68124. We will be hosting a product swap, so all those products in your drawer, cabinet, and closet...pull them out and bring them to the meeting. Bottles or jars must have a decent amount of product still left. You can bring as much as you would like...or you can purchase something to bring if you would like. Why did you decide to go natural?

>Going natural was something different from what I was use to. I decided to go natural unexpectedly and I wanted to see how long my hair would grow when it is natural compared to having a perm.

What was some of the feedback you received once you informed friends/family about your decision to go natural?

>There were a lot of people who did not believe that I was going natural and had a lot of negative responses. The main thing that everyone said was "Why would you do that when your hair is beautiful” and the response I gave was “It will be beautiful and healthy all in one!”

What do you love most about being or going natural?

>I love how healthy my hair looks. When I was getting a perm I needed to add a lot of grease to get the shine that I already had naturally. Also I love how diverse my hair is now; I can wear it curly or straight and the different styles I can wear are great!

What are your favorite products for your natural hair?

>Right now I am still experimenting with different products, but the main ones that have been consistent are Eco Styler Gel, Herbal Essences Conditioners (Totally Twisted & Length and Strength), Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and finally Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.

What are your can't live without products?

I have yet to find my "ride or die" products. I must say that I have to keep pure shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil for moisture, but I don't look at those as "products" they are more like nature's gifts =) As for certain things like that perfect shampoo (although I mainly co-wash), that perfect conditioner, that perfect product to define curls, and that product (whatever it may be) that will reduce shrinkage, I am still searching. Everyone has to be a product junky at least until you find what works for you. It would be so simple if we had a "one size fits all" product that we could all go and get, but unfortunately we don't, so you have to try out a lot of products until you find what your hair has been longing for. Have you found those products that work for you? What product is it and what are the benefits?
